How to Keep Your Home Safe When You Travel

If you are going away for a travel for a couple of days or more, one of your worries is the safety of your home.  The least that you want to happen is to discover that your home was robbed while you were away.  This is more worrisome if you are in a community where there is a high crime rate. Before leaving, you want to make sure that your home is safe and secure.  Below are some steps to ensure that your home will be safe while you are away.

Have assistance from someone you trust.  You can ask a close friend, relative or neighbor to check on your home and mailbox from time to time.  You may want to leave the key of the main gate, so that someone can turn on a light at night.  With this, no one will suspect that no one is really home.  You may also ask them to look after and feed your pet.

Refrain from announcing that you will be away.  Resist the temptation to post in social media that you will be out of town for a couple of days.  As much as possible, it should be kept confidential.  You may also tell your loved ones not to announce it. You may post your pictures after you came back.

Check the plugs.  Make sure to unplug all the appliances and gadgets before leaving.  Switch off all the lights as well.  Apart from safety, this will also save energy.

Place the valuables outside.  Do not leave your valuables where they can be spotted.  Say for example, your car been parked in the front yard or a bicycle left at the garage.

Be careful with your spare keys.  People usually leave the keys under a doormat or a flowerpot, so it is not advisable to leave your spare keys on those spots. You can leave them with a trusted friend or in any other spot which cannot be easily predicted.
